Tangle is an old Scots word for seaweed — the golden twists of kelp that wrap around Scotland’s shores. Haar is the cool, quiet sea mist that gathers over the North Sea, wisps reaching towards the land.

I’m Lois Calder, the designer and maker behind Tangle & Haar, working from my home studio in Montrose on Scotland’s east coast. I handcraft jewellery in silver, copper and brass, using recycled metals where possible and sea glass gathered from the beaches along Scotland’s shores.

My designs are inspired by the natural patterns, weathered surfaces and quiet stories of the coastline — twisting seaweed, ripples left in the sand, sea-worn glass and even the remains of old salmon-net posts, slowly being reclaimed by the sea.

I have always been drawn to the sea and to nature’s ability to shape and transform. Sea glass captures that beautifully. Once discarded, it is tumbled by waves, chipped, softened and weathered until something lost or broken becomes beautiful again. Each piece carries its own history, and perhaps a small metaphor for life too: that we can be changed by what we travel through, while still becoming something beautiful.

I allow the character of the materials to help shape each design, rather than trying to make every piece exactly the same. Everything is individually handcrafted in small numbers, and many pieces are entirely one of a kind. Slight variations and the marks of the maker are part of their story — a reminder that each piece has passed through human hands rather than a production line.

For me, making jewellery is about more than creating something beautiful. It is a way of paying attention — to the landscape, to the materials and to the small details we can so easily overlook. It has also become part of a new chapter in my own life: a source of creativity, purpose and connection.

I hope each piece carries a little of Scotland’s coast with it — a sense of place, memory and quiet resilience — and, in time, becomes part of the story of the person who wears it.
